It started when Miss Ika called me on last Monday. She asked me to do an observation in her class. To see how English is delivered to the kids. At first, I was surprised. Because, the day before Miss Ika called me, my ILP class told Miss Mira that we wanted to teach at ILP but in groups. Hahaha. Impossible, isn't it? And Miss Mira said that Miss Ika usually wouldn't let high-schoolers like us teach because of the children's parents. And what had happened was Miss Ika called me to come to ILP. But, I couldn't come that day because I had to go to my other course at NF. So she said I could come the next day at 3.30 pm.
I told my family about all of this thing. And they were and are very supporting me. I was nervous. But I tried to support myself to be sure that it would be okay. Actually, I don't feel good to Uta and Tiara—my ILP friends. I even don't know if they know that I am teaching at ILP. I asked Miss Ika if they were asked to observe like me or not. But Miss Ika said that not all the students got the opportunity to do this observation. And she also said :
"Because as we know that you always got the highest score in the class. And you've postponed for 3 terms but Miss Mira said your English is still good."
Hohohooo. And I'm proud of it.
Okay, go on. So it happened, I came to ILP on Tuesday. Lucky that my nephew, Fadhlan, also ILP-ing that day. So, I went to ILP with him. At ILP, lucky again that I met Miss Ika when I was going upstairs. So she gave me a little briefing then we went to the class. My first glance : the class was soooo noisy. No wonder, actually, they are kids. So I took the corner seat and see how Miss Ika taught. I thought it was easy to teach them. Because what Miss Ika did was just checking their wrong spelling. And Miss Ika left me and the class for she had to go downstairs. At first, I didn't know what to do. But as the time running, I was used to being with them. Plus, when they asked me about the lesson. I felt that they could accept me there. And it relieved so much.
At the end of the class, they went home. Miss Ika and I had a little chat before I went to my real class. She asked how that was. And what I said was :
"Well, they sometimes could be uncontrolled! They screamed, yelled, even pushed each other. But I think, overall, it was fun."
Miss Ika agreed with me. Therefore, she said, we have to raise our voice and call their names to make them quiet. After that, I went to my class.
The second of my observation—Thursday—, I was no longer nervous. I met Ruth—one of the students—on my way upstairs. She asked :
"Are you going to teach us today, Miss Ipeh?"
She called me MISS! Yess, Miss! Hoho... I felt a bit weird though. But that makes me feel more confident. Hehe. On that Thursday, they learned about Countable and Uncountable Nouns. It wasn't very hard, they got it easily. There were two new students that I know, Lintang and Jo. And again, I watched Miss Ika dan learned how she taught them.
Around 30 minutes to the end of the class, Miss Ika left me with the class again because she had to do the placement test for students. She left me some jobs :
- I had to check the kids' job after their finished theirs.
- I had to gave them a game before the went home. For this, she gave me some pictures about food and drinks. And the students had to decide which the countable and uncountable nouns were.
So I did my job. First I was a bit nervous. That was the first time I had a contact with them directly. But then of course, I get used to it. I checked their job and gave their books back. After all finished theirs, I did my second job. I stood in front of the class, and asked them to give me a complete sentence to decide the pictures. And who could answer correctly, she/he could go home. One by one, they answered and went home. They even shake my hand like what they did to Miss Ika when they were going home! Well, that pleased me much.
Not long after that, Miss Ika came back and again, we had a lil' chat before I went to my class. She said that I could teach them on the next meeting! Oh my God.. I was very surprised! Mm.. And afraid as well. Although she said she wouldn't be in the class, that didn't relieve me much. I even didn't know what I am afraid of. Miss Ika said that it would be okay. She thought that I could do that well. She also said that I had to come earlier which is at 2 pm. Gosh, feel like I'm a real teacher. Hahaha. But I convinced myself that I could do that. I remember that Miss Ika said that we have to be opening to something new. And I am trying to do that.
Oh yeah, FYI, I have a student named GOKU. You know Goku, rite? The one in Dragon Ball. Haha. And he said he really like Dragon Ball. Cool! Hahaa..
And todaaay, I supposed to teach them without Miss Ika. But I told her that I couldn't come because my SMP friend passed away. Rest in peace Hadiyat.. May Allah gives you the best place..
Sooo, my first teaching class will be on Tuesday if there are no obstacles ahead. And I really don't hope so. I really look forward it. Want to enrich my experience ! Wish me luck, Guys !
